Access to Community Lands Hangs In The Balance

***Update: the vote went ahead in favour of the GAA***

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

A vote will be taken at the Co-Op AGM on Thursday night on a most controversial issue involving the playing field at Clochscoilte.

The land was originally purchased by the Barna Co-Op in the 1980s, at a time when there were no public playing fields in the area. Subsequently, it was sold to the local GAA club in recent years.

There was a clause attached, however, to ensure that the Bearna-Na Forbacha community would continue to have access to the facility.

But, this clause proved problematic when the Barna GAA Club sought funding from its national body to help develop the land.

In the meantime, the playing field and the pitch-and-putt have been closed off to the public.

On Thursday night, Co-Op members will be asked to vote on a motion to "remove the community access covenant on the title to the Cloch Scoilte property in Barna."

All Co-Op and Tennis Club members are asked to attend and have their voices heard. The AGM will take place at 8pm in The Twelve Hotel's function room.
