Furbo Rise To Occasion For Greatest Triumph - 1984
Before there was Bearna-Na Forbacha Aontaithe, there was Furbo Soccer Club, which enjoyed its best successes in the 1980s.
One of the highlights was defeating West United to win the FAI Junior Cup Area final in 1984. The Furbo team on that day was: T O'Reilly, R McDonagh, J Tarpey, B O'Hea, J Delaney, F Concannon, T Curran, J Ward, G Francis, C Curran, and T Hernon. Subs: P McGrath and M Halliday.
However, even prior to this momentous win 34 years ago, there had been a great culture of soccer in the area, including the regular indoor 'fives' for both men and women, held in Teach Furbo. There is an article about one such event in 1981 at the bottom of this page.
Many years later, the home of soccer in our community is still Furbo. Bearna-Na Forbacha Aontaithe is a thriving club for both children and adults, with its own grounds in Knockavoddy, Furbo, including an all-weather astro pitch.
