Limited Say on Future of Bearna

The Local Area Plan for Bearna is up for review again, although feedback is only allowed on the material alterations previously proposed by County Councillors, rather than the entire plan.

Submissions or observations should be made in writing, clearly marked ‘Material Alterations to Proposed Variation No.2 (a) to the Galway County Development Plan 2015-2021 - Bearna Plan’ and addressed to: Forward Planning Section, Galway County Council, Prospect Hill, Galway, or forwarded by fax to (091) 509199 or sent by email to forwardplanning@galwaycoco.ie

The  Material Alterations include:

- Rezone Open Space/Recreation and Amenity land as Development

- Rezone Flood prone land as Development

- Rezone lands from Community Facilities zoning to Village Centre

- Remove the protection for sea views along R336

- Allow culverting of streams in developments

- Allow 2 1/2 storey buildings

It would appear that the Councillors did nothing to try to reduce the density required by An Bord Pleanala of 35-50 houses per hectare.

Councillors had been warned that the Minister for Housing/Planning may/will intervene to override some of these proposed alterations - the minutes from the meeting of February 26 are said to be worth a read:
