Read MoreIn March 1977, the community of Bearna-Na Forbacha celebrated the official opening of its new church. For years, the growing population had sought to replace the Church of St James, which was built in 1836.
Experts said the old church was in a poor state of repair and lacked "architectural feature or decor of any merit."
When Bearna-Na Forbacha became a parish in its own right in the early 1970s, the momentum grew.
Its design, by Simon Kelly Architects, is still admired to this day.
