Community Feels Let Down By County Council

“The proposed variation to the Bearna LAP, as you can see, offers very little hope for any new community amenities,” one local resident remarked today.

“The clubs in Barna/Furbo are investing hugely in capital projects at the moment, but I still think that Galway County Council should be providing some amenities/facilities for our village.”

Bearna Church is 40

In March 1977, the community of Bearna-Na Forbacha celebrated the official opening of its new church. For years, the growing population had sought to replace the Church of St James, which was built in 1836.

Experts said the old church was in a poor state of repair and lacked "architectural feature or decor of any merit."

When Bearna-Na Forbacha became a parish in its own right in the early 1970s, the momentum grew. 

Its design, by Simon Kelly Architects, is still admired to this day.

Access to Community Lands Hangs In The Balance

There was a clause attached to the sale of the land - to ensure that the Bearna-Na Forbacha community would continue to have access to the facility.
But, this clause proved problematic when the Barna GAA Club sought funding from its national body to help develop the land.
